Cambodia have significantly recovered ever since the fall of the regime. Though, the scars and pain of Cambodian people are hard to forget. After three decades of civil war, the fall of Khmer Rouge finally happened. Pol Pot, and the other senior leaders are arrested, dead or pardoned. Many see the trials of former Khmer Rouge leaders helpful to service justice, others see it as opening up fresh wounds.
Millions of landmines remain in the ground, even after the war. Since 1979, over 20,000 people have lost their lives to the landmines. Though the landmines are slowly being disarmed and discovered, and the casualty rate are significantly decreasing, Cambodia is not completely de-mined yet. Experts believe that with this rate, Cambodia will take up to 25 years to fully complete demining the nation.
Tourism may seem developed in Cambodia, but many only arrive and discover the Angkor temples in Siem Reap. Most tourists do not contribute very much to the economy, and that they do not learn about other cultural aspects of Cambodia.
