Nuon Chea’s or formally known as Long Bunruot, was born in 1927 and received studies in Bangkok. Nuon Chea initially learnt law, but never completed his studies. From 1945 to 1948, he worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and joined the Thai Communist Part. His work in the communist field escalated afterwards when he joined the Indochinese Communist Party, led by Ho Chi Minh in 1948.
In 1951 he was one of the founders who created the Revolutionary party of the Kampuchea People, this party later were transformed into Kampuchea Communist Party. He continued to work in the party ever since. In 1962, he became the Deputy Secretary General, just under Pol Pot’s ruling. In 1970 to 1975, Nuon Chea was the vice president of the Military Commandment of the People’s Armed Force, he was in charge of the military aspect of the KCP. In October 1975, Nuon Chea became officially Brother Number 2. As Brother Number 2, he was responsible for human labor, social welfare, culture, organizing propaganda and conducting education for the Khmer Rouge.
Eventually Nuon Chea acted as the prime minister of Democratic Kampuchea, he is also considered as the one of the most important men in the revolution. He helped to initiate the revolution and helped to shape Khmer Rouge’s ideology. Nuon Chea was only less powerful than Pol Pot.
Nuon Chea is prosecuted for the policies that made led to forced labour, and starvation in the countryside. He also was prosecuted for using violence against alleged enemies or prisoners of the regime. He was officially arrested and put on trial in 2007.
Nuon Chea does not agree with the charges against him and denied them all. He claimed that he never ordered the Khmer Rouge cadres to mistreat or kill people, to deprive them of food or commit any genocide.
