Under the regime, the idea of money and currency are abolished. There were no markets or schools, so children under the regime did not receive a proper education. But, they were educated based on what the Khmer Rouge wanted to teach them. Private property, foreign clothing styles and religious practices weren’t allowed either. Education centers and places for people to practice religions were shut down, some were turned into prisons or concentration camps.

Khmer Rouge targeted at anyone who are educated and religious including monks, teachers, bureaucrats, priests, politicians and the wealthy. The regime discriminated against foreigners and ethnic minorities, the people who were not fully Cambodians were executed. Hundreds of Vietnamese were killed whether they were in Cambodia or not as the Khmer Rouge invaded Vietnam. Cambodian minorities did not escape either.
